Win Deceived By the Others & Swag bag!

Deceived by the Others (H&W Investigations, #3)

Deceived by the Others (H&W Investigations #3) by Jess Haines
They're here, and they're real. . .werewolves, vampires, mages, and other creatures of the night. For New York P.I. Shiarra Waynest, taking care of Others business started out as a way to stay solvent. But now business is getting very, very complicated. . .

Shiarra's relationship with sexy werewolf Chaz may be somewhat unconventional. Still, after a few bumps, Shia is finally ready to get serious. That means meeting family—or in this case, bringing Chaz's entire werewolf pack along for a rollicking full-moon weekend in the Catskills.

Soon after they arrive, threatening notes appear, warning Chaz to go home. Then their cabin is ransacked. Shia starts digging to find out whether it's the work of upstart teenaged werewolves or something more sinister. Yet as rumors about her vampire connections arouse the pack's hostility, Shia has to contend with other dangers. Not just from an adversary about to make his fatal intentions known, but from a threat that's even closer than she knows.

Want to WIN Deceived By The Others by Jess Haines?

This is book 3 is her H&W Investigations series ~ let's talk about that.
How do you feel about picking a book up in the middle of a series, or hey, even book 2 in a series and reading?  Do you HAVE to start at book 1?
Do you have to have ALL the books in a series before you can start reading it?
Because, let's face it, w/ some series, like the Dark-Hunters, that's a LOT of books, and it could take you a while to get them all.

I'll just tell you straight out -- and some of friends try to shame me for it , lol -- I will read out of order, I will read last book first, whatever. Doesn't bother me.  If I like it or love it, I will go back and buy the series...if I LOVE it, I will buy the whole series RIGHT NOW and read through, and probably reread, at least skim, the first book I read.  There, it's out, lol.  I'm easy!

So to be entered, share your thoughts on this!!
You'll get the book, and bag of awesome swag, w/ things like pens, pins, book marks, post cards, etc...whatever I can stuff in the box.

Be sure to leave your email in the comments!!

  1. I admit to being a series snob...must start with the first one! but since becoming a reviewer I have had to get past my snobbiness. Some series must be read in order to really appreciate, but there are some out there that I was able to enjoy without reading the other books. It has a lot to do with the author and if they make it "read out of order" friendly... I have read all of Jess's books (in order!) and love this series. Thanks for the chance to win a print copy and some swag

  2. I am anal when it comes to reading series. I must read them in order. If I buy a second or third book in the series I will wait till I get the first one before I start reading. I drive my daughter nuts when I do that....LOL. Now once in a while I might read out of order if the story sounds really, really good. I did that with Larissa Ione's Demonica series. I just started Jess's series and have found that I really like it. I am about to start the second book. Thanks so much for the chance to win the next one and extras.

  3. I'm pretty OCD about starting a series with the first book in a series - that said I have occasionally made a mistake and started with the 2nd book but usually no further than that...it can be very time consuming to go back and get the first books in the series but I want to get all of the world building and character development as it came to the author. I already have this book (have all the books in this series so far) so no need to enter me in the contest.

  4. LOL, I think I'm totally in the minority about not reading in order...and I WILL if I have them all in front of me, but if I don't, I'll read what I have.

Cracking up on how you guys explain it...series snob, anal, OCD...I so have all that, but it had never bothered me to read first, or even first few out of order.

  6. I actually don't have to read books in order. If I pick up a book and it is the 3rd book or so in a series, and I enjoy it, I will generally go back and read the previous books though.

  7. I am one of the ones who have to read a series in order. Even worse, if it looks like the series has nothing but cliff hangers, I will wait to read the book until the entire series is finished. Sometimes a book references characters and incidents that I know nothing about and it throws me out of the story.

  8. If a series book interests me, I'll read it. If I'm totally engaged, then I will go back and read the rest of the series in order. So, yes, I am guilty of jumping right in--to the middle, wherever--before I get to the beginning. mochfly(at)swbell(dot)net

  9. I don't read out of order if the series is one story in several parts(mortal instruments). If they are merely set in the same world, or have the same characters, I'll read out of order if they have different plots(seven kingdoms trilogy)

  11. It's funny because I'm not OCD about anything else, but I have a really hard time reading out of order. I'm trying to break myself of that but it's hard since every atom of my being screams "NO" when I try to pick books up out of order. In this series, I have read the first two books, so I would jump right on this one.

  12. Another vote for reading series in order. I also like it when several books have come out already by the time I hear about it so that I can read a bunchin a row without having to wait.
